Oracle supports HK's e-business

The Hong Kong leg of iDevelop'99 sponsored by Oracle Corporation opened in Hong Kong Thursday.

The two-day iDevelop'99 comprises of conferences, seminars and hands-on development sessions for local Internet developers and software companies.

The largest of its kind in Hong Kong, the event aims to provide participants with the latest technologies, tools and support initiatives to develop applications for e-business.

"To maximize the opportunities that the Internet provides, developers need new tools and a new way of developing and deploying applications," said Mark Jarvis, Oracle's senior vice president of worldwide marketing.

"iDevelop'99 aims to introduce developers to Oracle's Internet computing platform so that they can build e-business applications that take full advantage of the immense business opportunities on the Web," said Jarvis.

According to Jarvis, the Internet technology of Oracle, the world's leading supplier of information management software with annual revenues of over $8.3 billion, has helped the success of e-business sites such as Amazon.com, Yahoo!, and eXite.

According to the 1998 Collaborative Marketing Survey, nearly 70 per cent of the world's top e-business sites use Oracle's database, tools and application products.

"As Hong Kong strives to become the leading city in Asia for e- business, it is critical that we develop our expertise in building applications that take full advantage of the Internet," said Arics Poon, Oracle's Hong Kong manager.

"By building new Internet applications, local developers and software companies can strengthen Hong Kong's position as a world- class, competitive service center," Poon said.
